Definition web: Antibodies

Y-shaped proteins generated by B cells. These proteins are present on the B cell surfaces, and are secreted into the blood or lymph in response to an antigenic stimulus, such as a bacterium, virus, parasite or transplanted organ. The antibody neutralizes the antigen by binding specifically to it.

Antibodies are also known less familiarly as immunoglobulins.
